Disability workforce

A strong and skilled disability workforce is vital to delivering a high quality NDIS.

As the NDIS rolls out, demand for innovative, flexible and personalised support is expected to increase dramatically, stimulating growth in the delivery of disability services.

As a result, the disability workforce will grow, meaning more jobs and more opportunities for professional development and career progression for workers.

Keeping our sector strong: Victoria’s workforce plan for the NDIS

In Victoria, $26 million is being invested as part of Keeping Our Sector Strong: Victoria’s Workforce Plan for the NDIS. This will provide disability workers with the opportunity to expand their skills, and increase the range and diversity of job roles available to them.

The workforce plan includes significant investment in professional development, training and support to ensure that people delivering disability services are well supported in their careers and day-to-day work.

As part of the plan, the government will equip disability services staff with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive under the NDIS, improve job satisfaction, create new, stronger career pathways within the sector, and increase allied health workforce capacity and sustainability.

The workforce plan will also enable the government to test collaborative practices across both NDIS and other service providers to support better outcomes for people with disability.

Registration and accreditation

The Victorian Government has announced that it will establish an independent, legislated registration and accreditation scheme for the State’s disability workforce.

This scheme will ensure workers have the right skills, experience, and qualifications for their role and can work confidently in the NDIS environment.

Engagement with the workforce

The Victorian Government has also established a Workforce Development and Transition Working Group as part of its NDIS Implementation Taskforce to provide advice on workforce development needs, quality standards and workforce capacity issues.

The NDIS Skills Forum, an industry taskforce established by the Victorian Skills Commissioner, has also played a key role in advising the Government on training and skills issues associated with transition to the NDIS.

Understanding the workforce experience of NDIS: longitudinal research project

To understand how the needs of workers in the Victorian disability sector are changing as the NDIS rolls out, we have partnered with the Health and community Services Union to conduct a survey of the workforce once a year for three years commencing in 2018.
