Three years on from the Royal Commission into Family Violence

Message from the Premier

Three years ago, we launched our nation’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence.

And in doing so, we promised to fundamentally change the way Victoria responds to – and prevents – family violence.

We promised to fix a flawed system. To hold perpetrators to account. And crucially, to keep victim survivors and their families safe.

In releasing its final report, the Commission made 227 recommendations – every single one of which we committed to making a reality.

Three years later, and with more than half of the Commission’s recommendations implemented in full, we’ve taken great strides.

This report – aptly titled Three Years On – charts that all-important progress.

This includes establishing five Orange Door sites, located around the state, which are already changing the way we respond to women and children experiencing family violence.

Thousands more are benefitting from our flexible support packages, providing victims survivors the assistance they need, as they recover and rebuild their lives.

We’ve removed barriers to information sharing and changed the way family violence risk is assessed, ensuring perpetrators are being held to account and kept in full view of the system.

And from our classrooms to our sporting clubs, we’re challenging gender inequality – because addressing family violence must also include addressing the culture that underpins it.

We’ve achieved so much over the past three years and are proud of our progress to date.

At the same time, we know there is still a great deal more to do. And that meaningful change can only be achieved with long-term, sustained effort.

It’s why, working alongside the dedicated women and men in our family violence sector, we’ll continue implementing these life-changing and life-saving reforms.

Together, we can achieve a Victoria free from violence.

The Hon Daniel Andrews MP
Premier of Victoria
