Child information sharing scheme receives royal assent

The Victorian Government is helping ensure no child falls between the cracks by allowing health, education, child and family services to share information about those in their care.

On 10 April 2018, the Children Legislation Amendment (Information Sharing) Act 2018 received royal assent.

The Act creates a streamlined child information sharing scheme that gives professionals access to the information they need to keep Victorian children safe and well.

The new Child Information Sharing Scheme complements the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme by enabling services – such as Maternal and Child Health and Child FIRST – to work together to address a range of needs and risks for children and families.

The two schemes will be implemented in alignment for a first group of services from September this year. A second phase of implementation will take place in 2020, when most health and education services will also be included.

Together, the child and family violence information sharing reforms will help create a more collaborative, integrated system and achieve better outcomes for Victorian children.
