LGBTI Family Violence Working Group

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse and intersex (LGBTI) Family Violence Working Group was established in 2016 to assist with family violence reform co-design and consultation processes on behalf of the LGBTI Taskforce. The LGBTI Taskforce was established in 2015 to provide advice to the Minister for Equality, identify government priorities and ensure policy, programs and services are inclusive of LGBTI communities. The Taskforce has a number of expert working groups.

The Working Group is made up of high-level representation from across Victoria's LGBTI sector, including service, research and advocacy organisations, and includes members from across a number of LGBTI communities.

The Working Group is co-chaired by the Commissioner for Gender and Sexuality and the Executive Director, Diversity, Engagement and Strategy Branch of Family Safety Victoria. Family Safety Victoria also provides secretariat support.

The Working Group provides government with guidance and advice on the needs of LGBTI community groups as they relate to family violence prevention and response, and broader social services reform. Members contribute their knowledge and expertise to assist government in embedding responsiveness, inclusiveness and LGBTI cultural competency across its reform agenda. More specifically, members provide advice regarding:

  • LGBTI-specific Royal Commission recommendations 166-69
  • the development, guidance and review of family violence policy, guidelines and services as they relate to LGBTI communities
  • current and emerging LGBTI family violence issues and government policy to address these issues; and
  • on any other matters referred to it by the LGBTI Taskforce and/or Family Safety Victoria.
