Treaty Community Engagement Program

What is the Treaty Community Engagement Program?

The Treaty Community Engagement Program aims to support Traditional Owner groups and other Aboriginal organisations and business to:

  • engage with Victorian Aboriginal communities and non-Aboriginal Victorians on key matters relating to the treaty process
  • gain practical insights into how self-determination and treaty can strengthen Victorian Aboriginal communities
  • build capacity amongst Traditional Owners and other Victorian Aboriginal groups in preparation for the next phase of the treaty process

Aboriginal organisations can now apply for the third round of the Treaty Community Engagement Program. This builds on the more than $1,655,500 in grants provided to 26 Aboriginal organisations across the state.

Key dates

Close date (round 3): 8 March 2019

What types of projects might be funded?

Category 1: Treaty Circle Grants (Up to $10,000 plus GST)

Treaty Circle Grants are intended to support smaller consultations on the treaty process (Treaty Circles). This may include consultations with Traditional Owner groups, Aboriginal people living in a particular area, a clan or family group, Elders, young people, women and Aboriginal people working in a specific field, such as health or education.

Treaty Engagement Grants are intended to support in-depth, ongoing engagement and research projects relating to self-determination and/or the treaty process. This may include in-depth community engagement at a significant scale, such as consulting on what treaty means to a large Aboriginal group, such as a Traditional Owner group or the Aboriginal community of a particular town or region.
